How is your sleep?

If you would give it a rating, what would it be?
How do you wake up most mornings?
And does the quality of your sleep impact your days?

I remember a time when my youngest daughter was about one year old, I felt tired all the time. My sleep was disturbed ever since my eldest was born. Almost every morning I had to drag myself out of bed and I had lots of energy dips during the day. Or a total lack of energy.

Sleep is very underrated these days.

Because we are too busy, too much to do/see/read/listen to, to go to bed on time.

While sleep is so important for your overall wellbeing. To feel fit and energised during the day. To give our body the chance to restore and de-stress.

If I would tell you sleep has an impact on your weight, would you make your sleep a priority? 🙂

It’s true. And many people don’t know this:

Lack of sleep causes your body to hold on to weight or even gain weight.

Here’s why:

when you’re in constant stress mode, the body stores fat (because it feels it’s in danger). Sleep is a great way for the body to restore from stress. Not enough sleep or bad sleep prevents the body from de-stressing properly

when you’re tired from lack of sleep you are hungry more and crave the wrong foods. Quick fixes for quick boosts of energy. So you’ll eat more and more of the wrong foods.

lack of sleep causes you to feel tired which often results in less physical activity

So now that we know this, let’s make sleep a priority!

5 easy tips to improve your sleep

1. Eliminate/reduce caffeine and alcohol (to avoid waking up at night to go to the bathroom and can cause restless sleep)

2. Don’t consume caffeine within 7-8 hours before bedtime

3. Turn off electronic devices 1-2 hours before bed

4. Finish dinner 3-4 hours before bedtime

5. Sleep in a totally dark room (all sources of light off) or wear eye covers
